Better care through a safer working environment

In the USA alone, some 200,000 work-related injuries are reported among nurses and care workers every year. Half of them are related to poor ergonomics and hazardous lifting or support of patients. This trend global and extremely costly. However, there are ways to improve – care for the nurses!

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare sector in the USA has surpassed manufacturing and construction as the most hazardous line of employment. In fact, it has an injury rate twice the average of all private industry jobs combined. The picture in Europe is almost identical. According to the EU, the work-related accident rate among professional caregivers is 34% above average.

At least half of these injuries are caused by a poor physical working environment. Too many unsafe lifts of patients and general lack of focus on ergonomics are root causes of the majority of reported incidents.

Hospitals include patient lifts in workplace policies
The main way to bring the number of costly injuries down is to enforce a good workplace safety policy and to have the appropriate equipment available to assist the care staff. Using, for example, a modern patient lift will indisputably help bring down the number of incidents.

Many hospitals around the world are implementing new workplace programmes* encouraging staff to use the necessary equipment to avoid strains, sprains, and other damage to joints, muscles, or tendons. This has shown to not only improve patient comfort and care staff health – it has also helped hospitals save money.

Improved ergonomics and safety is a money saver
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics has estimated that compensation costs for injured care staff in the US amounts to 1bn USD annually. Naturally, the healthcare sector has an interest in minimising this wasteful expense.

It is a well-known fact that LINAK makes some of the most powerful and user-friendly electric actuator systems for patient lifts on the market.
